Caylus App Reviews

Love this game!

Easy to figure out, but extremely challenging. Great game!

Excellent representation of the board game

While I have a few small criticisms, overall I was very pleased with this application as it aligned with the board game to a tee. A few suggestions: 1) The skeumorphic design of the application made it difficult to determine which spaces were what, as the icons for the resources/spots were very small. I would suggest making them larger. This is especially important for beginning players as anyone without a decent knowledge of the board game could be confused as to which icons mean what. 2) A nice addition to the application not included in the original game is the use of avatars/characters for each player. This is nitpicky, but the "character" options are quite limited. More specifically, there arent very many characters from which to choose, and nearly all of them look pretty deformed. It would be nice to see more choices with the ability to change the clothing, hairstyle, etc. 3) They did an excellent job of designing an interface which packs a lot of features into a tiny package—not an easy feat. However there is a learning curve and the tutorial isnt the most streamlined. I would suggest something where users new to the game can go through and execute each action as practice, with two options: a) a beginners option that includes descriptions of the rules alongside interactive introduction to the application interface and b) a tutorial for intermediate/advanced players which is just teaching the interface portion 4) Difficulty of computer-generated players: while the level of difficulty of the offline computer-generated characters gradually increases, they only peak around an intermediate skill level. It would be nice to see the addition of expert-level computer avatars. 5) With devices running older versions of iOS, the application is buggy in connecting to the online servers. While I have no problems connecting with my iphone 5, my first gen iPad running iOS 5 will say "connecting to server" but then never make it past that point. Because the app description says it will run on even older versions iOS, I think it is important that the app developers look into that issue, as it is rather annoying to have to play all online games on the smaller screen of my phone.

Good board game

This game hasnt been updated in over a year. Time for some improvements! The game certainly could benefit from an undo button, as it is just intricate enough that you can really mess up your game if you hit the wrong button. Also it needs to be optimized for the "new" iPhone 5s bigger screen. Right now it is very eye - squinty. Never been able to finish an Internet game. Would be nice to play locally with others over Bluetooth or wifi. Other than that, its great!

Crashes!!

In the middle of an online game and it crashes. So I open it back up, and it crashes every time I try and open the game... Also, why wont it let me play an internet game with wifi? Only when I use my LTE, will it let me log in. I only have this problem with this game. Doesnt matter which wifi Im using either. Says "check internet connection." The internet connection is fine. Please fix this! The game is really fun. Great gameplay. But until the bugs are fixed this app is 1 stars. Please fix the bugs, and Ill write a better review :)

Great game, good conversion, buggy

This is a excellent translation of this great board game to the tablet. I run into bugs with the game crashing when I try to open the app after switching apps on my iPad 3. Also there seem to be bug with selecting favors during the corresponding building tiers, such as having to select none and then none again. The cursor moves, but you dont get to build a wood building.

Excellent worker placement with only one issue

If you enjoy worker placement games and in-depth strategy Caylus is for you. Think Stone Age or Lords of Waterdeep but with a lot more meat on its bones. The only problem Ive encountered is the game crashing during final scoring which is unforgivably annoying.

Game crashes

I want my money back purchased it on 2 ipads for family but it crashes and wont let you resume game.

Crash

Go in crash when start an online game, need fix.

Great Implementation of a Great Board Game

No complaints. Ive been able to beat the AI pretty handily (but Im familiar with the board game, so its not because the AI is totally brain-dead or anything). So Im looking forward to playing multiplayer.

Tutorial not very helpful

This seems like a decent board game, but dont expect to pick it up from the tutorial. The tutorials for Carcassonne and Agricola are great examples of how to introduce the game to new players.

Excellent and fun!

Great board game. My husband and I love to play it together before we go to sleep. Nice strategy - highly recommend!

Good but needs updates!!

This is a great game with nice graphics. BUT have to take two stars of for: Insufficient gameplay explanations. After reading all the tutorials I still had no idea how to play. Had to look up online how to play. ❗️❗️❗️biggest need is to have it when you touch a building it tells you the name and info about it!!!! Its hard to keep looking in the manual! iPhone 5 screen support needed It is a good game that could and should be improved. Glad I got it on sale though. Agricola is an example this game could learn from.

What a disaster. Save your money.

I love Caylus, and I think this implementation is simply awful. Dont believe any reviewer who thinks the UI is good. I would rather play the board game by myself than subject myself to this lame design. Perfect example of Apple-like "form over function" design except that in Apples case, at least their final form is elegant. This program is a shining example of how to take a great game and destroy it with a nonsensical, difficult to use interface. A real travesty in my opinion.

Worst

Worst game ever. Nothing works. Useless crap.

Buggy as heck; dont buy if you have any friends

Purchased this app myself and as a gift at Christmas to play over Internet with my boyfriend. Of the maybe 6 games weve played, 2 have turned into insta-crash bombs midway through playing, never to be reopened successfully again. This appears to be a known issue as Ive discovered it noted in forums, but no updates have been noted on the developer blog since 2012. Wrote to support email regarding this issue and got no response. Game Center integration in this app wont let me invite others or see my friends anyway, so only spend your money if you want to play the computer. Wish theyd just fix it instead of taking peoples cash!

Crash Override

Started an Internet multiplayer game. Played a few turns successfully over the course of a week. Tried getting back in the game to take a turn, and now the app just crashes.

Computer AI is busted

I love the game, but playing it recently I have noticed that the AI is completely busted. Each cpu player will only go for coin moves and then ends their turn when all the spaces are used. Completely unplayable, please fix!!

Great on iPad only

Ive played this both on my wifes iPad, as well as my iPhone 6 plus. The game is exactly the same except the AI is useless on the iPhone. The iPad version has pretty challenging AI for a newbie like myself. I hope the AI on the iPhone can be fixed, as time on my wifes iPad is limited

New update broke lots of stuff

The game is a complete joke against AI, now. The computer players do the same thing every turn, which is go for money spaces, then pass. I just won a game by over 100 points. Also the bank is broken (can’t convert money to gold) and buildings where the provost currently is should be able to be activated, but they’re currently greyed out.

Broken

Game is broken. AI only takes money and passes. Bank is broken, cant spend money to get gold. Spaces with the provost are greyed out when they should be useable. I was hoping they would fix it but its been over two months since I got the game and its still broken.
